Bonding with wood is a gift from time

Bonding with wood is a gift from time; using wood as a medium, we reflect on our true selves

In an old factory building in Beijing's 798 Art District, sunlight shines through high windows onto scattered wooden beads. Several post-80s girls from various fields are gathered around an old wooden table, arguing: "Why is such excellent traditional culture only hidden in museums?"

At a chance cultural exposition, the three of them bonded over a discussion on the "contemporary expression of the Five Elements culture". Over countless weekends spent in tea discussions, they discovered that everyone was troubled by the same pain point - the ancient wisdom of the Five Elements, which could clearly nourish life, was packaged in a way that was obscure and difficult to understand, becoming increasingly distant from ordinary people.

"Why not do it ourselves! Let's turn the culture of the Five Elements into something that can be worn on the wrist and integrated into daily life." When Su Wan said this, a rosewood bead on the table happened to roll into her palm, and the warm touch felt like a spiritual light - this marked the beginning of the story of "Mu Jiu". It was also the starting point for the five guardian spirits of the Five Elements to step out of their imagination and into real life.

Origin: A string of beads, a journey of cultural roots-seeking

The name "Mù Jiǔ" embodies the brand's most authentic original aspiration and reflects its deep-rooted connection with the guardian spirits of the five elements.

Wood, as one of the five elements, carries the natural energy of growth and vitality, just like the "forest dweller" who wears a crown of leaves and holds an evergreen staff. He is the spirit of an ancient divine tree, planting saplings wherever he goes and carrying the fragrance of vegetation with him. This is very similar to when we were young, when our grandmother would always put peach wood branches in our schoolbags, saying, "Wood can protect and bring peace." Nowadays, when we are busy with work, we love to touch those thousand-year-old wooden objects, feeling the warmth and resilience of life just like the forest dweller.

Metal, water, fire, and earth correspond to the other four guardian spirits: the cold and sincere "Junxiao", formed from the essence of the five metals, with a deep-seated obsession with texture; the agile and transparent "Lanxi", condensed from the water of the Milky Way, who always loves to sit by the water and twirl a seaweed bracelet; the fiery "Yanzhao", armed with a Heaven Burning Lock, whose mobility is as strong as a burning flame; and the calm and steadfast "Kunmo", born from the earth's veins, with the strength to carry mountains, and the ancient sandalwood bracelet on his wrist hiding a sense of stability.

Nine, as the ultimate yang number, symbolizes longevity and eternity. We hope that this passion for traditional culture can continue for a long time, and we also hope that the qualities of these five guardian spirits can accompany users through the long years, through every piece of work.

People nowadays often complain that "life feels like pressing the fast-forward button". We thought, what if there were a small object that embodies Junxiao's perseverance, Linqi's vitality, Lanxi's clarity, Yanzhao's enthusiasm, and Kunmo's calmness, allowing people to slow down when they touch and wear it, and reflect on their own inner selves. Thus, a bracelet that integrates the wisdom of the five elements and the characteristics of guardian spirits became our first goal.

Kernel: Instead of replicating tradition, it is to make tradition "come alive"

"The Five Elements are not some esoteric theory, but rather the principle of balance hidden in daily life." This is the belief that the Mu Jiu team has always adhered to.

Metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, these five substances correspond to five energies: the perseverance of metal, the growth of wood, the flexibility of water, the passion of fire, and the weightiness of earth. They mutually reinforce and restrain each other, circulating endlessly, just like modern people need to find a balance between busyness and relaxation, rationality and sensibility.

Initially, this concept was not well received. Some said, "Young people don't appreciate old relics," while others questioned, "The Five Elements culture is too abstract; no one will understand it when it's implemented." But we always believed: Cultural inheritance is not about clinging to ancient texts, but about integrating ancient wisdom into life in a way that contemporary people can accept.

We have established three ironclad rules: we do not engage in obscure "cultural preaching", but only provide warm "daily companionship"; we do not use cheap materials to perfunctory, and every piece of work must embody authentic five-element energy; we do not blindly pursue trends, and our design must balance aesthetics and practicality. This persistence has become the most distinctive brand essence of Jiu.

Craftsmanship: Hands of women, polishing warmth in every inch

As female entrepreneurs, our craftsmanship lies in the delicate details.

When selecting materials, they will "listen" to the sound of wood as if they were dealing with friends: red sandalwood, with its high density and fine texture, carries a sense of calmness, corresponding to the perseverance of "metal"; green sandalwood, with its elegant aroma that becomes more intense when exposed to water, resembles the flexibility of "water"; and phoebe sheareri, with its warm touch and texture resembling mountains and rivers, aligns with the heaviness of "earth". In order to find high-quality raw materials, we have traveled deep into Sichuan and Yunnan, following local craftsmen to select wood in the primeval forests, even developing calluses on our hands without feeling tired.

During the design process, we meticulously adjusted the size of each bead - trying out 12mm beads which were too bulky, and 4mm beads which were too thin. Ultimately, we settled on two designs: three circles of 6mm beads and a single circle of 10mm beads, which perfectly fit a woman's wrist. Even the choice of accessories is thoughtfully crafted: upgrading from the initial basic texture to using all s925 silver, allowing the five elements to achieve perfect balance within a small space.

"The warmth of handmade craftsmanship cannot be replaced by machines." For each bead, our workers go through 12 processes including material selection, cutting, grinding, and polishing, which takes at least 3 days to complete. In order to make the texture of a "Five Elements Balance" bracelet more harmonious, we disassemble and reassemble it repeatedly until we are satisfied in the early morning.

Peers: The encounter between wood and hands is a mutual nourishment

In Mu Jiu's story, there is never a lack of warm companions.

A female graduate left a message: "When I felt overwhelmed by pressure for the first time in the workplace, I touched the green sandalwood bracelet on my hand and smelled the faint aroma. Suddenly, I felt calm. It turns out that the power of the five elements can really soothe the soul."

An aunt born in the 1960s shared, "I originally bought it for my daughter, but I ended up liking it more and more as I wore it. Now when I chat with my daughter, we discuss the knowledge of the five elements together, and I feel that the distance between us has become much closer."

Another entrepreneur received a rosewood bracelet from a friend during a low point in his life. The bracelet was engraved with the Five Elements principle of "metal generates water, water generates wood", which made him understand that "adversity is also an opportunity for growth". Later, he not only became a loyal user of Mujiu, but also actively participated in the brand's Five Elements culture salon, sharing his own story.

These feedbacks have become the driving force for our team to move forward. Based on user suggestions, we have launched customizable "parent-child style" and "couple style" products; added a woodworking experience session in the salon, allowing everyone to personally string beads and feel the charm of traditional culture; and even established a "Five Elements Cultural Exchange Group" to bring together people who love traditional culture to share their insights.

"Mujiu is not just our brand, but also a gathering place for all those who love traditional culture and pursue a balanced life."

Progressing: From a string of beads to a lifestyle

Nowadays, Guanjiu has grown from an initial team of three to a small team of over ten members. However, what remains unchanged is the original intention of "using wood as a medium to reflect on one's inner self".

In the future, we will not only focus on bracelets. We will extend the Five Elements culture to more life scenarios: for example, designing wooden bookmarks with a Five Elements theme to make reading more ceremonial; launching wooden aroma diffuser boxes to combine the warmth of "wood" with the healing power of fragrance; and even collaborating with intangible cultural heritage artisans to develop wooden tableware with Five Elements patterns, bringing traditional culture to the dining table.

Conclusion: Meeting you is where the real story begins

Wood is the carrier of time, culture is the gift of years, and the five guardian spirits of the five elements are the gentle love letters that Mu Jiu wrote to life. Mu Jiu's story has just begun.

We always believe that cultural heritage doesn't have to be lofty and unapproachable. It can be a bracelet worn on the wrist, embodying Junxiao's perseverance and Linqi's vitality; a bookmark on the desk, imprinted with Lanxi's clarity and Yan Zhao's enthusiasm; a warm companion in daily life, carrying Kunmo's calmness. The wisdom of the Five Elements doesn't have to be obscure and difficult to understand. It lies in the tactile sensation of materials, in the stories of guardian spirits, and in every gentle embrace with life.

Take wood as the ninth element, observe and reflect on freedom; the five elements mutually generate and protect each other.

We are here, with full sincerity, waiting to meet you. May every touch make you feel the warmth of wood and the power of guardian spirits; may every wearing bring you inner peace; may every companionship allow you to experience the wisdom of the Five Elements culture.

This is the story of Mu Jiu, the story of the five guardian spirits of the five elements, and it will eventually become your story.
